Tips for Tasteful Lawn Décor

System - Sunday, October 30, 2016

Yards make a statement. Whether you feature bright flowers, hanging baskets, or lawn ornaments, landscaping adds a lot of uniqueness to a home. Lawn ornaments can be a lot of fun, but if there are too many cluttering the yard or they aren’t placed in the right areas, it could take away from the beauty of the yard. Strategically-placed garden art and ornaments will add style and grace and here are some tips on how to achieve this.

Tip #1: Keep it simple.

Garden gnomes are cute, but too many of them around the yard can be tacky. Have fun with the lawn décor, but keep it simple and not over the top. For example, a simple bird bath surrounded by shrubs where birds can make their homes is a great idea. Or, if the home is older and has a special history to it, consider using antiques in the yard décor like old farm equipment planted with beautiful, bright flowers.

Tip #2: Know where to place your décor.

Walk through the yard and look carefully at where décor could be placed. Find places where people will be able to see and appreciate the lawn décor and consider using a few larger pieces to create a focal point to specific areas. Be careful not to place them too close to walking paths or other spots where they could be a tripping hazard. It’s also important to keep in mind that proportioning the décor to the size of the yard is key. If the yard is small, large accent pieces will overpower the space and make it feel cluttered and large landscapes should avoid the use of lots of small pieces.

Tip #3: Remember the overall style/décor of your home.

Garden art and décor should always accent the color and overall style of the home. For example, if you have an old, classic home that is a bit on the formal side, using plastic frogs or flamingos in the garden wouldn’t match. Or it’s a small cottage that needs some decorating outside, modern sculptures don’t often align with that specific type of home, whereas artistic antique pieces may.

Always remember to decorate to the theme of the home so it flows, rather than in a manner that makes it stand out like a sore thumb.
